Writing and Music: What’s in your playlist?

Over the course of the past month as I’ve been frantically banging away at the keyboard writing the draft to my novel Obsession, I’ve realized that while  it isn’t too difficult to put myself in the POV (point of view) of my hero and heroine, it’s a definite challenge to put myself in the head of my villain(s).  My hero and heroine are, after all, fairly normal people (okay, okay, I know – I’m not a megalicious mega movie star but who hasn’t ever dreamed about being one?) and it isn’t out of the realm of possibility to imagine myself as them.

But my villain(s)?  That’s definitely another story.  How does one become obsessed?  How does it feel to be obsessed with another person?  Obsessed enough to kill?  At least for me, that’s not within the scope of my experience and so it can be very difficult to put myself in that frame of mind the result being that it takes me longer to write scenes from my villain(s)'s perspective.

Fortunately, I’ve discovered that listening to music about the darker side of love helps (put me in the mood?).  I’ve started putting together a playlist of songs about obsessive love.  Naturally, I’ve called my playlist Obsession
J

When I listen to these songs and pay attention to the lyrics, I'm able to put myself in the skin of my villain(s), feel their emotions and think their thoughts. (Scary!)

Here’s what I have so far in my Obsession playlist.  Listen to a few and let me know if you feel anymore obsessive afterward.

Ready?  Okay, go for it.  The DJ is waiting!

If you are on Facebook, you can go to my playlist and listen to the songs directly by following this link: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=app_2413267546&ref=profile&id=100000486740054

Kristine’s Obsession Playlist

1.       #1 Crush by Garbage

2.       Possession by Sarah McLachlan

3.       Paparazzi by Lady Gaga

4.       You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift

5.       It’s No Good by Depeche Mode

6.       Every Breath You Take by The Police

7.       Don’t Stand So Close To Me by The Police

What do you think now?  Are you feeling more Obsessed?  I believe that music has a tremendous impact on how we feel and perceive the world.  But now I have a problem.  I don’t have enough songs in my playlist!

Can you help me by suggesting some songs about obsessive love?

I’d love to hear from you so enter your comments below and send me your Obsession Playlist recommendations.

Happy Writing,

Kristine

Hi Edith!  I'm planning my work and working my plan as the saying goes   And your right about the playlist - I try to write my villain scenes when I'm alone because as you said, you never know... LOL!

BTW, let me know if you come across any good Obsessive Love songs to add to my playlist.  7 songs is just too few.
